Design your own keychain instead of buying one
An engraved name tag costs $10–18 and takes a week to arrive. Printed at home it is three to five grams of filament — a few cents — and twenty minutes.
The obstacle was never the printing, it was the file. Printing needs an STL, and getting one meant either learning to model or hunting through Printables and MakerWorld hoping someone happened to make your exact name. That is where it fails: other people's models are plentiful, your own name is not there.
This generator skips the step. Type the text, switch on the loop, download the file. The loop is not a separate ring butted against the lettering — it is fused into the same body, so the slicer sees one part, not two touching.
Print settings for keychains that do not snap
A keychain is an awkward part mechanically: small, flat, with a hole exactly where all the load is applied. Most break because of settings, not the model.
- PETG over PLA. PLA is stiff and looks great but is brittle. On a keyring it takes knocks daily and eventually tears at the loop. PETG is tougher.
- Thickness 4–6 mm. Below 3 mm it flexes and cracks. Above 8 mm it is bulky in a pocket.
- Perimeters beat infill. On a part this small the outer walls carry the load. Four perimeters at 20% infill are stronger than two at 60% — and faster.
- At least 3 mm of material around the hole. The single most common failure point.
- Print flat, text up. Layer adhesion is the weakest axis in FDM. Flat, the pull acts within the layers rather than across them.
- Brim 4–5 mm for script fonts. Thin tails have almost no footprint and lift mid-print without one.
Which font for a keychain?
The font decides something practical, not just aesthetic: whether you get one connected part or a pile of loose letters.
- Script fonts — the safe choice. Pacifico, Dancing Script, Great Vibes, Caveat. Letters touch naturally and form one body.
- Heavy display fonts. Bebas Neue, Fredoka, Bowlby One. Separate letters, but very robust — good for short words and numbers.
- Thin serif fonts — avoid. At two centimetres tall the hairlines end up narrower than one nozzle width and the slicer simply drops them.
Rule of thumb: no stroke thinner than 2 mm. On a 0.4 mm nozzle that is five passes side by side — enough to survive being pulled.
